Here is how EXCEL can help teachers and students

In the quick & progressing lifestyle of people, there is utmost demand for shortcuts & advanced methods to understand and resolve the daily problems. As educators, you live in a data driven environment where you have to make educational decisions to measure student performance .
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet that can help you record, sort, calculate and display information. You can record test scores, averages, attendance, class projects, etc.

This information can be displayed on report cards, progress reports, form letters to parents, graphs, and other formats. Let us have a look at how to use Microsoft Excel effectively in the teaching-learning process.

Excel for Understanding Calculations

Microsoft Excel formulas, formatting options, and other data management and visualization tools can help students to perform complex mathematical, logical, and financial calculations faster with accuracy.

Excel As a Grade Book

A grade book is an easy way to demonstrate averages, medians and other analytical formulas. However a teacher can do more than just average a student's grade.

Grades can be placed into categories that are weighted differently, for example having homework affect the final grade less than exams.

A teacher can quickly spot trends as a student's grade changes over the term, singling out struggling students for extra help. Class averages help a teacher evaluate whether the coursework is too easy or difficult.

Excel for Data Collection

For students data collection can be used to record homework grades, class assignments, and test scores to keep a tally of the overall class grade.  Spreadsheets can also be used to keep track of a budget for a hypothetical business, club, or personal living expenses, or specific information from a science lab.

Excel As a Non-Mathematical Tool

Although Excel focuses mostly on the mathematical aspects of the spreadsheet application, many teachers have found creative ways to use the software that have nothing to do with numbers. Rather than the same old physics quiz, try creating an Excel crossword puzzle. The clues would all be physics questions and the grid could automatically check student answers as they enter them. Students have fun and learn at the same time.

The grid format is ideal for creating historical timelines that are easier to visualize than lists of dates. These can be printed out for student reference or turned into a game where students drag events into the timeline presented, sorting them in order.

Excel for Timetable/Calendars

Students and teachers will benefit from putting important events in order in a timeline or calendar.  The time line can also be used  to record steps to a procedure.  These options allow students  and teachers to organize what they have learned or plan for future events.

Excel is a tool with a broad range of uses that go beyond simply calculating averages. Teachers who take a creative approach to a spreadsheet discover new ways to use Excel to enrich their lessons. Excel may seem intimidating at first, but by just starting to use the program for basic tasks in your life, you will get a better feel.
